Jen Graham uses traditional embroidery and patchwork techniques to reinvestigate American history and to discuss current political and social issues. At War With Ourselves is on display March 20 – April 7, 2017, in the LXS Gallery located on the first floor across from the Caucus Deli in the Legislative Building, 401 S. Carson St., Carson City. LXS is open to the public, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Embracing the sewing arts and their history as forms of storytelling, records of family history, and sometimes even propaganda, Graham use the American Civil War as a platform to discuss the polarities of contemporary politics. She believes that in many ways the United States is still political fighting the Civil War politically and ideologically. The battles over tradition vs. progress, state vs. federal power, big vs. small government, and the struggle for equality and civil rights provoked the Civil War and are still ongoing struggles.
